Compartment Syndrome Illustration

Hi All,

I hope you're all doing well and getting ready for the holidays.  I've been working on some illustrations lately and thought I'd share one quickly.

As you may know, I was a medical illustrator for about 10 years for the Air Force, supporting clinical teaching and residency programs, while I was on active duty.  I would do work for teaching lectures, print and publications, public information, murals, etc.  Occasionally I still get a little freelance work, doing some anatomical illustrations.

Recently I did an illustration for the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.  The illustration will be in one of their publications in the near future.  It's a simple, clean illustration depicting two openings created to release pressure from fluid build up from compartment syndrome.  This build up could be caused typically from trauma/injury that doesn't allow for healthy circulation in the affected extremity.  The incisions allow for excess fluids to be released by seeping/flowing out of the openings.

I'm currently working on more medical illustrations as well.  I'll share them with you when finished.
In the mean time, have a great December and enjoy your Christmas, or whatever holidays you celebrate.

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween Everyone,

I hope you all have a lot of fun tonight.  Enjoy and also be safe out there - there will be a lot of kids out trick or treating.  Should be a great night.

I'll be in the usual costume....EMT in the Ambulance.   But we'll have some fun out there too.

Enjoy the holiday, be careful for kids, and show a little kindness to others.  I have great memories of trick or treating - people showing thier hospitality and candy to us rug rats.  Good times.

Boo!

Duane "The Rock" Johnson Caricature

Hi All,

It's been a busy summer and fall has finally come to the Valley of the Sun (thankfully).  Even though it's been busy this summer, I've still been working on some artwork here and there when I get the chance.  I love doing caricature work and I have a new one to share (although I finished it a while ago).

Recently I was hanging out with my granddaughter and we decided to do a little drawing.  I love hanging out and drawing with her - and she's a pretty good budding artist.   She found a topic to draw and I found an old magazine with The Rock on the cover and decided to start a piece based on him.

I started with pencils and a piece of bristol board and started a loose caricature of Duane Johnson.  When finished drawing I put it down and forgot about it.  Eventually I picked it up again a few weeks later and decided to finish the piece.
pencil sketch/caricature.
After I bought the pencil sketch along, I took a photo of it and brought it into Photoshop and did some digital painting.  I started by giving the image a sepia tone (a light brownish color).  I tightened up just a few areas that needed it, added a background design and a border; some finishing touches that I can easily apply with Photoshop and my Wacom drawing tablet.

I enjoyed this project and I like the subject matter.  Typically, D.J. makes movies that are exciting and fun and a lot of times family friendly.  I've enjoyed many of his films and used to watch him wrestle, with my sons, years ago.

In a world as polarized as we live in today - Duane "The Rock" Johnson is a guy most of us can agree on.  This is a rare quality these days.

So remember the things we can agree on and that even though we may have differences, we all share a common humanity.  Have a great week everyone.

"Can you smellllll.......what the Rock is cooking?"

Peace,

Glenn Frey Portait - Fly Eagle

Hi All,

I hope you're all doing well.  It's been a while since I've posted anything here.  Everything is fine, but I've made some changes and have been pretty busy lately.  So I haven't had the chance to post anything or create any new artwork since the Christmas Card.

I've been working as an EMT in an outreach capacity to assist the homeless community for several months now.  So I've taken a step back from the massage and holistic therapy biz and producing freelance or personal artwork.

I've got ideas for projects and recently I've been itching to do a little artwork...to make some time to get into the creative mode again.  I haven't been pursuing any freelance work and side biz, but still like to do some projects -- I enjoy creating art and sharing as well.

In the past few years some of the musical artists that I've enjoyed over the years have passed away.  Folks like Prince, David Bowie, Greg Allman, Tom Petty, George Harrison and others have died.  Another one is gone as well recently - Glenn Frey of the Eagles.  It's been a while, but I decided I'd do a picture of him.

I always thought Glenn Frey was the coolest of the Eagles.  From the time I was a young kid, the Eagles were a band who's music filled the airwaves.  From the country-rock music they made in the early 70's to the more guitar heavy rock of the mid to later 70's and 80's, they were always one of my favorites.  This portrait has an up close larger image of Frey from the mid-70s era and a smaller image from later years, when the band re-united again and went out on tour.  So here's to you Glenn....Fly Eagle, Fly...

"Fly Eagle, Fly" - Electronic Illustration by Tom Kreienbrink

As usual, this portrait started with a pencil sketch on paper.  After working out some of the detail, I imported the sketch into Photoshop and then created the finished illustration with an electronic drawing and painting technique using a Wacom stylus and tablet.  Basically its a freehanded drawing/painting technique, except its completed using the computer instead of traditional media.  It's a little different for sure and can be much more forgiving.  Using the layering features and various brush sizes, opacity percentages, etc...also give it a much different feel from using traditional media.

I hope you enjoy the pic.  This weekend and coming week, get out some of those old Eagles albums (or crank it up on line).  Enjoy some of the great rock and roll that Frey and his bandmates created all those years ago.

Have a great day,

Tom

Farewell to Tom Petty

Hi All,

I hope you're doing well.  I'm doing alright.  I'm keeping busy with a job doing outreach to homeless folks, here in Phoenix.  I'm the EMT on the team.  Here in the USA it's a big holiday week.  We celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday.  It's a great chance to get together with family and friends and celebrate and give thanks for the many blessings that we have.  I'm working the holiday, but so grateful to be getting together with family when I can this week.

On quite a different note, recently quite a few of our favorite musicians (and other celebrities as well), have passed away.  One in particular, that I've enjoyed over the years was Tom Petty.  As I became a young adolescent in the late 70's, he was breaking out on the national music scene with his band The Heartbreakers.  Later on he did some solo work and even was part of a supergroup, The Traveling Wilburys.

About 10 or 11 years ago I was able to catch a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concert with my wife and friends in Maryland.  The crowd was so excited and the band seemed to be having so much fun...it was pretty special.  I've seen some pretty good shows, but this one was as good as any that I've ever been too.

A few weeks back I started playing around with my sketchbook and a pencil, drawing a caricature illustration of Tom Petty.  I'd like to share it with you here.

Tom Petty - pencil and digital paint. 2017.

It's kind of a fun and loose caricature.  I started with the sketch and imported it into Photoshop, where I did a little more work, some shading, some background, etc.

Farewell Tom Petty.  We'll be here enjoying American Girl, Free Falling, Handle with Care, Learning to Fly, and the rest of your music.

Have a great week everyone.  Enjoy Thanksgiving Americans.  There's plenty of places to help out the less fortunate this holiday season, if you're inclined.  They appreciate it.  Those of you travelling this week - be safe and happy trails.

Till next time..... Peace.

Tom

Some Good Info About Sugar

Hi All,

How are you?  How's fall going for you?  It's going pretty good here in Phoenix.  Whew...I think we finally made it thru summer here.  It was a long one.  I hope things are going well, wherever you are reading this.

I've always been interested in healthy living, eating, etc....and...I'm still a work in progress.  I get plenty of rest, meditate, exercise some, feed my mind and spirit, but the one area that I've always struggled with the most is probably food/diet.  My goal right now is to eat healthy portions and healthy food, and not be too strict, but moderate.  Some days I do better than others.

Recently, the topic of sugar came up again and caught my attention.  So I wanted to go back and take a closer look and I'm now also cutting way back on my sugar intake.  Here's some of the info I've found and some things you may want to consider with your own daily diet.

Did you know? Sugar is 8 times as addictive as cocaine.

Basic Facts: Sugar is added to almost all processed foods.  Over the course of a year the average American consumes 150lbs of sugar, (or 3lbs weekly).  That’s 500 extra calories a day.   What benefit do we get from it? None.  It adds no nutritional value to foods, just empty calories; calories that we don’t need.
Here’s the bad news about that; excess sugar intake can affect our health in a very profound and negative way.

Side effects of excess sugar intake include:
-          anxiety and depression
-          Increased inflammation in the body
-          Decreased function of our immune system
-          higher blood pressure
-          Places stress on the liver and kidneys, and even skin
-          And of course, obesity
-          One study done at UCLA links sugar with a compromise in mental functions; it can actually give us a brain fog.  One recommendation to combat this is having a regular meditation practice.

Recommendations for consuming excess sugar on a daily basis:  For men, no more than 37.5 grams daily and no more than 25 grams a day for women.  Added sugar is; sugar or sweetener added to foods, (not including the natural sugar already existing in the food itself).

photo of a spoon of sugar

There are many benefits of cutting excess and processed sugar from your diet.  Of course if you cut the excess sugar, you immediately reduce the risk of the side effects listed above.  On top of the boost to your immune system:
-          Your skin will thank you – excess sugar is bad for your skin.
-          You’ll have more energy.  Too much sugar in your diet can make you sluggish.  It acts like a drug and sooner or later, as with drugs, you come down from the "sugar high" and “crash”
-          You’re less likely to develop chronic diseases – sugar is hard on your organs and immunities.
-          You’ll sleep better – and who doesn’t like better, more restful sleep?

Basically, Sugar is like a drug…it's addictive, and you become dependent on it, and you’ll want it all the time.  The more sugar you consume, the more your body will crave it.

An article by Amy Krasner, from the Chopra Center website lists some holistic ways of dealing with the sugar cravings.
-          Keep your blood sugar balanced. You can do this by trying to avoid skipping meals, and include some healthy fats and protein in your meals too, (i.e., avocado, nuts and seeds, olive oil, wild salmon).
-          Healthy upgrades – keep some healthy treats around – for example; when everyone at the office is eating sugary treats, you can dip into your personal stash and have a little dark chocolate or maybe some homemade healthy treats.
-          Incorporate sweet veggies into diet (sweet potato, beets, carrots)
-          Notice your emotions – and deal with them, instead of binging and “eating your emotions.”
-          Get enough sleep.  Studies show a link between lack of sleep and sugar cravings.  People tend to drink more sugary drinks when the sleep less than 8 hours nightly.  Not getting a good nights sleep has been linked to elevated levels of appetite regulating hormone – ghrelin.  Elevated levels of this hormone is associated with higher intakes of carbs and sweets.
-          Check out and get to the root cause.  What is that?  Is there a medical problem?  Are there other issues you're trying to eat away, by eating excess sugar.  Bring in professionals when needed.

There's a lot more we could discuss.  For me - I'm working on removing excess sugar from my diet.  Soda pop is out.  I'm working on cleaning up the diet all the way around.  Some days go better than others....but it's getting better.

Good luck in your process of taking care of yourself.  I hope it goes well.  Have a fun Halloween and Autumn.  Enjoy the aftermath of a wonderful summer and take care of yourself...you're worth it.

Peace,

Tom

Digital Painting - Mike Daniels

Hi All,

How are you doing?  Things are going pretty good out here in AZ.  It's crazy - I know that it's getting cold and leaves dropping off the trees in so many places, and here it's still around 90 degrees in the day.  But that's how it is.  It was a long hot summer - so it's nice to get a little break.

I've been working on a little more artwork this fall.  I'm just finishing another Green Bay Packer piece.  This one features defensive tackle and amazing player - Mike Daniels.  This guy is a huge, powerful lineman whose motor never stops.  This is turning out to be a big year for him, so I felt it was time to get a Mike Daniels illustration in the collection.

Mike Daniels - digital paint by Tom Kreienbrink

I drew and painted the entire piece on my old Mac computer in Photoshop, using my Wacom tablet.  I used a line art technique first.  Drawing the images on the top layer.  Then I colored the images of Daniels on a layer below the line art.  Finally, I applied a green background, border, text and finishing touches.

I love illustrating people.  Being a Green Bay Packers fan, I enjoy illustrating some of my favorite players.  On this piece, I thought I'd try a little bit of an old school comic style.

Enjoy the artwork - and enjoy fall, the rest of football season and the coming winter.  Every day is a gift, so enjoy it (even Monday).  Work on something creative yourself, and spread a little kindness around you.

Have a great day.

Peace,

Tom
